The Long Song

A historical novel on slavery in Jamaica, told through the eyes of a fictional slave woman. With an unexpected witty and matter-of-fact manner, the story carries us through the slave revolt on the island, and how the face of slavery changed on this island in the 19th century. Underneath the mask of seeming nonchalance, we are able to sense the sorrow and hardship experienced under slavery, made all the more obvious by the way she tries to brush it away. Truly subtle and powerful writing.
