On Studies and Silences

“I wouldn’t want to do a masters in education. I don’t think I want to stay in this line forever.”

To my surprise, she nodded in agreement.

“Ya, you don’t look like the kind that would stay.”

“Really? Then, what “kind” do I look like?”

“You look like the kind who would want to do what you like. If its something you don’t like, you won’t see the point in doing it.”

Silence reigned for a few long seconds.

“Wait. Isn’t that just common sense? That statement could apply to everyone! No one would see the point in doing something they don’t like!”

“Not necessarily. Some people may have families to feed, so they stay on for the benefits and security. Some stay on because they do not know what else they can do… or want to do. So they stay on. Some complain and grumble and lament, but they still stay on, because it could be the only thing they know how to do. And some… some people just have extremely high levels of tolerance.”

We laughed.

And this time, the silence lingered on much longer.
